Working Days Calculator Guide

Counting working days in India is awkward because the working week and the holiday list both vary by employer and by state. This guide explains how to set the calculator up so the count matches your workplace.

Start with your working week

Monday–Friday is common in IT and corporate offices. Monday–Saturday is still normal in manufacturing, banking operations, retail and many smaller firms. Alternate Saturday working is widespread too, which no fixed preset can model reliably. Our calculators let you tick exactly which weekdays count as working days, so you can match your own roster rather than accept a default.

Why we do not ship a holiday list

India has national holidays, state holidays and employer-specific optional or restricted holidays, and the list changes every year. A built-in calendar would be wrong for a large share of users while looking authoritative. Instead you paste your own company holiday list, and the calculator excludes only those dates that fall on days you already count as working days.

Worked example

You need the working days between 1 April and 30 April on a Monday–Friday week. April has 30 days; with the weekends removed you are left with 22 weekdays. If your company observes two holidays in the month and both fall on weekdays, the working-day count is 20. If one of those holidays falls on a Saturday and you do not work Saturdays, it changes nothing — a holiday can only remove a day that was going to be worked.

Where people use this

  • Pro-rata salary and leave-without-pay calculations for a partial month.
  • Project planning, where a deadline is quoted in working days rather than dates.
  • Notice periods that an employer counts in working days rather than calendar days.
  • Estimating deliverable dates when adding a number of working days to a start date.

Common mistakes

  • Being unclear about whether the start date itself counts. Decide once and stay consistent across the whole comparison.
  • Listing a holiday twice, or listing one that falls on a weekly off.
  • Using a Monday–Friday count for an employer that works alternate Saturdays.
  • Assuming payroll uses working days at all — many Indian employers compute pro-rata pay on calendar days.

Limitations

The calculator counts days according to the rules you give it. It cannot know your company’s shutdown weeks, shift rosters, compensatory offs or regional holidays, and it does not decide how payroll treats a partial month. Use it as a planning aid and confirm anything that affects pay with your HR or payroll team.
