How to use this calculator

  1. Pick the last working day you are aiming for.
  2. Enter your notice period in days.
  3. Choose calendar days or working days.
  4. Resign on or before the date shown, ideally with a few days of buffer.

Formula

Resignation date = Desired last working day − Notice period

Reverse notice-period calculation simply runs the standard calculation in the opposite direction. In working-day mode the tool steps backwards one day at a time and counts only days that fall in your working week and are not on your holiday list.

Worked example

If you want 31 December to be your last working day and you serve a 60 calendar-day notice, you should resign by 1 November.

Assumptions

  • Notice begins immediately after the resignation date.
  • No approval delay is added; add your own buffer if approvals are slow.

Limitations

Employers may accept a resignation on a later date than it is submitted, which pushes the exit date out.

Confirm timelines with HR before committing to a joining date elsewhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I work backwards from a target exit date?

Subtract your notice period from the last working day you want. The result is the latest date you should submit your resignation.

Should I resign a few days earlier than the calculated date?

It is usually safer. Acceptance dates, approvals and handover discussions can add delays, so a small buffer protects your target exit date.

Does the notice period start on the day I resign?

Most employers start counting from the next day, and some start only once the resignation is formally accepted. Check your policy.
